The Importance of Good Sleep

We all know we feel gross when we haven't gotten enough sleep, but have you seen the research that's been done on sleep deprivation and the things it causes? A prime and fairly obvious example is that while you're sleepy, it slows down your reaction times which can lead to more accidents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates about 100,000 car crashes every year due to lack of sleep. On top of that, job injuries can accumulate, leading up to disasters that can be catastrophic (remember Valdez? Chernobyl? Research suggests that sleep deprivation was a big part of those incidents). On top of that, it's been shown that not only does your reaction time slow down, but you actually have a harder time thinking and learning. You can't remember things as well, you aren't as alert or attentive, you can't concentrate or reason properly. During certain phases of sleep in the night, it appears that the brain is actually packing away and consolidating the information you learned since you last slept, so when you short-sell this process you're actually risking never fully retaining anything you ever learn.

Sleepin’ Warm

It gets COLD out here at night. Which is amazing because it gets so ridiculously hot during the day. But that’s not a real comfort when it’s time for bed. No, for night time it’s all about the blankets.
Sure, I could waste energy and consequently money on using the space heater every night, or I could curl up in a brand new set of sheets and a nice big fluffy comforter. Thing is, we’ve got a lot of pets. And pets tend to ruin that top sheet over time.

Nobody likes a ratty comforter, so we are often in the market for a new one when it just gets to be too much.  Thankfully, our local Sleepys has some really nice sets for well under a hundred. So we’re picking up this really nice but basic 3 piece set to try to survive the rest of the winter/spring until summer

Allergy Remedies: Bedding?

If you’re like me, you have allergies. A lot of allergies. If you’re like me, you do everything you can to reduce your symptoms as much as possible, too.

Something I had never considered before recently was hypo-allergenic bedding. There’s actually a whole line of products designed just for people like me who need all the help they can get living a life free of stuffy sneezy allergic reactions. I was looking online and found a nearby company, Sleepys, carries a bunch of products designed to work against things like bed bugs and mites. “Use on car rides or in hotels to ensure a safe, clean rest away from home!” the site boasts. I’m not sure I’d go that far, but it’s still a great idea for around the home.

Sounds like a deal to me, I’m looking up as much stuff as I can find and trying it out.

How To Read In Bed

You may think that reading in bed is a great thing to do for sleep. Yes it can be, but only if done properly. Otherwise, you will be making it much more difficult to fall asleep easily and regularly. Here are three tips to ensure that you read in bed properly:

  1. Only read. Turn off the tv and other background distractions. Believe it or not, they will take up most of your time that should be spent reading and getting into a sleepy mode.
  2. Set your limits. How many pages or a whole chapter? It really just depends on you and your comfort level. Make it a routine number of pages and it will be easy.
  3. Repeat. Do not read every so often. Make it a point to do it often and repeatable. You must do so, if not it will not stick.

3 Tips to Sleep Well in the Winter

Sleeping in the winter can be a cold and uncomfortable ordeal. This can be particularly true if your house doesn’t hold in heat so well. Fortunately, there are some ways around it.

  1. Bulk up. Don’t wear flimsy nothings to bed. Wear flannel pajamas, to keep the heat near your body, or sleep in sweat-clothes for added warmth.. For that matter...
  2. Use flannel sheets. They’re soft, comfortable, and they keep the heat really well. Meaning that you can keep the bed warmer more easily.
  3. Shower before bed. It will warm your body temperature up, as well as to help you relax.

3 Commonly Asked Questions From Readers Like You

We love receiving questions from our website visitors. We recently asked our blog readers to ask us any questions they had regarding mattresses. We received more than two hundred questions and attempted to reply back to each one with a concise answer. We have also taken the top three commonly asked questions for your convenience:

  1. How do I get a great mattress? Visit a Sleep Store USA and speak to a sales associate. Let them know about your current sleep troubles, medical conditions, etc. They will be more than happy to help you.
  2. What should I expect to pay? This was a very common question. Unfortunately there is no flat answer. It depends greatly on mattress size, comfort level, warranty plans, etc.
  3. What should I look for in a mattress? If your current mattress is giving you poor sleep, then you need to find a mattress that is truly comfortable and will help you get back into a regular sleep schedule.
